Homes Delivered to Daufuskie Island by Barge

Homes Delivered to Daufuskie Island by Barge image

See how two modular homes were transported to the island in South Carolina accessible only by boat or barge.

Not even a body of water can stop Clayton Homes of Hinesville from delivering the dream of homeownership to our clients. Two friends, Norbert Chandler and Ted Franks, had big aspirations of retiring to the small island of Daufuskie off the coast of South Carolina on land Norbert had purchased over 40 years ago. Norbert chose a Clayton Built home, however they had to cross a hurdle first - the only way onto Daufuskie Island is by boat or barge.
Stefanie Franklin, Project Coordinator, and Pam Wolfort, General Manager, had a massive undertaking in figuring out the logistics of delivering the homes.

"There is not a bridge that goes to Daufuskie Island," said Pam. "Everything is by barge or boat. I didn’t even know where to begin. There were a lot of little details, and we had to make sure we were all under the same understanding with the contracts."

Eventually, the Hinesville team worked out every step of the delivery. The proper-sized barge was scheduled and trucks readied to drive the homes down the narrow island roads. Pam also helped the house meet all the island-specific housing codes, since it is a recognized historic district. In addition to Dafuskie’s housing codes, Norbert’s 6' 6'' stature also required some special customizations to the house, such as raised countertops and showerhead.

"Pam and Stefanie had an invested emotional interest to actually make this thing happen on Daufuskie," said Ted. "I couldn’t be happier with the entire experience. It was professional, but it was also personal."
